The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. In the 3rd minute, Wilfredo Etxahun ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Rui Varela was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. In the 8th minute Wilfredo Etxahun shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rui Varela saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. If Omar Etor had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 10th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Rui Varela showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Blas-Armando Giunta in the 12th minute of the match. Grêmio FBPA's Rui Varela played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Wilfredo Etxahun in the 14th minute of play. 15 minutes into the game, Sporting de Gijón's Omar Etor nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Rui Varela made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-2. In the 18th minute, Lautaro Blanco hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The audience thought a goal was coming when Celso Mendes got free with Fausto George in the 19th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Omar Etor sent away a hard shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After 23 played minutes Grêmio FBPA got a freekick which was hit by Dário Paraibano. Rui Varela didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Wilfredo Etxahun went, in the 24th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-3 was the resulting score. Sporting de Gijón's Omar Etor got a good chance for a goal in the 27th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 29th minute, Ruslan Rudchenko hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Grêmio FBPA's Rui Varela played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Omar Etor in the 31st minute of play. When Eloy Timo came up free with the goalie in the 33rd minute, the Sporting de Gijón fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Eloy Timo couldn't finish the play. 35 minutes into the match, Grêmio FBPA's goal looked a bit too open when Wilfredo Etxahun came free, but Rui Varela reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Rui Varela showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Wilfredo Etxahun, who was totally free with the ball in the 38th minute. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Enrique Pires during the 41st minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 41st minute, Enrique Pires hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Celedonio Kinsen fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 47th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rui Varela having to interfere.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Wilfredo Etxahun made a kick off. Fausto George made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Celso Mendes in the 59th minute of play. After a rather tough play, Grêmio FBPA's Dário Paraibano got a free kick in the 64th minute. A collision led to Sporting de Gijón getting a freekick after 65 minutes play. Eloy Timo hit a great ball. Sporting de Gijón made a substitution. Aaron Anselmino replaced Eloy Timo. Bernardinho Guerra was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 70 minutes into the match. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 70th minute of the game. One of Grêmio FBPA:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Sporting de Gijón:s goal. 73 minutes into the match, Grêmio FBPA's goal looked a bit too open when Wilfredo Etxahun came free, but Rui Varela reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Aaron Anselmino fell near the penalty area in the 74th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Sporting de Gijón's protests and gave Aaron Anselmino a yellow card for diving instead. Wilfredo Etxahun scored 0-4 in the 80th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Rui Varela, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Rui Varela showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Wilfredo Etxahun in the 84th minute of the match. In the 89th match minute, Grêmio FBPA was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Enrique Pires to maneuver through the defense. 96 minutes into the match, Grêmio FBPA's goalkeeper Rui Varela had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Wilfredo Etxahun. Rui Varela made a fantastic save in the 97th minute, when Blas-Armando Giunta sent off a good shot on target. Grêmio FBPA's Rui Varela proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 99th minute of the match, managed to save Grêmio FBPA from getting a goal against them. The Grêmio FBPA fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. Sporting de Gijón were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
