The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Marcelo Barovero showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Aurelio Badilla in the 3rd minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Tonete Abaurre in the 9th minute of play forced Costa Rica's goalkeeper Frank Mora to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Frank Mora showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Juan Funes, who was totally free with the ball in the 12th minute. Brian Chaverri made in the 17th minute of the game a throw-in that took a bad bounce and was taken care of by Bolivia's Luis Cristaldo. In the 17th match minute, Costa Rica was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Brian Chaverri to maneuver through the defense. In the 18th minute Juan Funes shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Frank Mora saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 20 minutes, Aurelio Badilla made it 0-1 with a short kick to the right side. Bolivia's Marcelo Barovero tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. Frank Mora took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Juan Funes, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Juan Funes in the 24th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Frank Mora prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Juan Funes recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 31st minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. If Juan Funes had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 34th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Frank Mora took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Juan Funes, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 42 minutes into the match, Costa Rica's Jorge Luna sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Marcelo Barovero narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The corner led Costa Rica's Brian Chaverri to fire away a dangerous shot which Marcelo Barovero despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. If Antonio Picado had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 47th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Juan Funes to make the kick off. In the 52nd minute, Costa Rica's Leo Calvo dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 0-2. Reiner Fallas in the 56thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Marcelo Barovero, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. If Leo Calvo had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 60th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Costa Rica's Alain Duarte was substituted for Giovanni Lehman. Marcelo Barovero showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jorge Luna in the 66th minute of the match. In the 70th minute, Juan Funes left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The audience thought a goal was coming when Reiner Fallas got free with Marcelo Barovero in the 81st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Bolivia made a substitution. Cipriano Abechuco replaced Ysmael Abad. In the 88th minute Ponciano Abarca shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Frank Mora saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 91st minute, Ponciano Abarca hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Bolivia's Marcelo Barovero proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 92nd minute of the match, managed to save Bolivia from getting a goal against them. Dennis Vilchez succeeded in the game's 93rd minute to shoot an unreachable shot under the crossbar and scored - 1-3. The supporters of Costa Rica booed when Bolivia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 97 match minutes in a wonderful position. Alejandro Chumacero didn't get a good kick on the ball. The Bolivia supporters were disappointed that their team didn't take anything from the match, despite matching Costa Rica's performance. The match ended with a win for Costa Rica.
