The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. After 2 played minutes Sporting de Gijón got a freekick which was hit by Eustacio Loiola. In the 6th minute, Saturnino Curcio ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Thibaut Courtois was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Matias Bilintx in the 10th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Thibaut Courtois saved GUSESI from getting behind. 14 minutes into the game, Matias Bilintx cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-2. Thibaut Courtois was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 18th minute, Alejandro Rufo hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 21st match minute, GUSESI was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Luis Tonete to maneuver through the defense. After 22 played minutes Sporting de Gijón got a freekick which was hit by Alejandro Rufo. In the 23rd minute, GUSESI's Olgierd Dawiec ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Óscar Cordoba. Óscar Cordoba yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-2. Thibaut Courtois took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Diego Maradona, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Diego Maradona in the 29th minute of play forced GUSESI's goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 30th minute of the match, managed to save Sporting de Gijón from getting a goal against them. Óscar Cordoba was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Luis Tonete showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 2-2 in the 32 minute of play. After 45 played minutes Sporting de Gijón got a freekick which was hit by Rune Fanström. After having played for 45 minutes, Basri Tanyeli managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. GUSESI's supporters crossed their fingers, but Basri Tanyeli was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Matias Bilintx stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Thibaut Courtois made an important save on a dangerous shot by Alejandro Rufo in the 53rd minute. A collision led to Sporting de Gijón getting a freekick after 56 minutes play.
