Erkan Fostiropoulos took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 7th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Henning Sæmer. FC Nordsjælland's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. FC Nordsjælland's Henning Sæmer played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Erkan Fostiropoulos in the 10th minute of play. 12 minutes into the game, Eberhardt Sarbak was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. FC Nordsjælland's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Rot-Weiss-Essen the free kick. After 13 played minutes FC Nordsjælland got a freekick which was hit by Eberhardt Sarbak. Henning Sæmer came out of the goal in the 14th minute to try and stop a shot by Rot-Weiss-Essen's Sandu Alexa. But to his dismay, Sandu Alexa quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. In the 18th minute, Erkan Fostiropoulos got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 21 minutes into the game, Sandu Alexa cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-2. Henning Sæmer was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. FC Nordsjælland's Henning Sæmer played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ebbo Böse in the 25th minute of play. Jørgen Otteskov charged in rather forcefully in the 26th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Ebbo Böse in the 40th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Henning Sæmer saved FC Nordsjælland from getting behind. Ebbo Böse received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 45th minute. Henning Sæmer tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 48 minutes into the match, Rot-Weiss-Essen's goal looked a bit too open when Benjamin Nygren came free, but Uwe Ziege reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After the first half Rot-Weiss-Essen were leading 1-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

FC Nordsjælland's Ibrahim Osman was substituted for Benjamin Nygren. When Jeppe Tverskov fell near the penalty area in the 54th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored FC Nordsjælland's protests and gave Jeppe Tverskov a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to FC Nordsjælland getting a freekick after 54 minutes play. Henning Sæmer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Erkan Fostiropoulos in the 64th minute of play. 67 minutes into the match, Sandu Alexa notched a goal, 1-4, to the right of FC Nordsjælland's Henning Sæmer. Henning Sæmer was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. 81 minutes into the game, Freddie Græsborg was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. FC Nordsjælland's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Rot-Weiss-Essen the free kick. After some fancy dribbling in the 82nd minute, Erkan Fostiropoulos managed to get in a good position for a shot. Rot-Weiss-Essen's supporters rose to their feet, but Erkan Fostiropoulos was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Henning Sæmer breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The supporters of FC Nordsjælland booed when Rot-Weiss-Essen was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 87 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sandu Alexa didn't get a good kick on the ball. Tymoteusz Terasek hit a great freekick 94 minutes into the match. In the 96th match minute, FC Nordsjælland was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Sindre Walle to maneuver through the defense.
