In the 3rd minute of the match, Mark de Zwaan got a very nice opportunity to score, but Tony Van Der Weghen was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. FC Bruges's Tony Van Der Weghen played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Olof Wesseling in the 4th minute of play. Young Boys Enschede's Jacco Heesen played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Tony Henderickx in the 5th minute of play. Edgar Degens fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 7th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tony Van Der Weghen having to interfere. When Olof Wesseling fell near the penalty area in the 10th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Young Boys Enschede's protests and gave Olof Wesseling a yellow card for diving instead. Olof Wesseling kicked well hit freekick during the 10th minute of the match. Tony Van Der Weghen showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Edgar Degens, who was totally free with the ball in the 18th minute. 21 minutes into the match, Young Boys Enschede's goal looked a bit too open when Tony Henderickx came free, but Jacco Heesen reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Olof Wesseling had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 22nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Lorenzo Loozen made in the 24th minute of the game a throw-in that took a bad bounce and was taken care of by Young Boys Enschede's Robin Mos. When Gregorie Van Beersel fell near the penalty area in the 26th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored FC Bruges's protests and gave Gregorie Van Beersel a yellow card for diving instead. Gregorie Van Beersel kicked well hit freekick during the 26th minute of the match. 26 minutes into the match, Young Boys Enschede's Harmen Scheffer broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. Mark de Zwaan received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 30th minute. Tony Van Der Weghen tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Jacco Heesen took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tony Henderickx, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 33 minutes, Steve Bergmeester mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Young Boys Enschede and the FC Bruges players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 33 played minutes Young Boys Enschede got a freekick which was hit by Steve Bergmeester. An unexpectedly hard shot by Tony Henderickx in the 34th minute of play forced Young Boys Enschede's goalkeeper Jacco Heesen to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Young Boys Enschede's Jacco Heesen played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Richy Wiggers in the 39th minute of play. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Richy Wiggers in the 42nd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Jacco Heesen prevented the ball from getting in the gole. FC Bruges's goalkeeper couldn't reach when Edgar Degens 46 minutes into the game got a good kick on the ball which found its way into goal just inside left pole. 1-0. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 1-0.

The wind increased when Richy Wiggers made the kick off in the second half. Tony Van Der Weghen showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Edgar Degens in the 55th minute of the match. Jacco Heesen had great luck who in the 56thth minute grab hold of the ball when Tony Henderickx from a short distance tried to put the ball inside the right post. Thanks to some nice moves Richy Wiggers could shoot a difficult shot in the 69th minute, which Jacco Heesen however easily saved by the left post. After a defensive mix-up in FC Bruges's zone, Edgar Degens stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Tony Van Der Weghen came out of the goal and Edgar Degens tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 72nd minute Edgar Degens shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Tony Van Der Weghen saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The supporters of Young Boys Enschede booed when FC Bruges was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 73 match minutes in a wonderful position. Lorenzo Loozen didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 79th minute, Robin Mos hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 80 minutes into the game, one of Young Boys Enschede:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. Antonio Eggers placed the ball on the penalty spot and got himself ready to shoot. Post out! In the 83rd minute, Young Boys Enschede's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Richy Wiggers fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post. Young Boys Enschede's Edgar Degens got a good chance for a goal in the 86th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After some careless play in the FC Bruges defense, Edgar Degens kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Tony Van Der Weghen. The FC Bruges fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Tony Van Der Weghen should have stopped the shot. After a defensive mix-up in FC Bruges's zone, Edgar Degens stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Tony Van Der Weghen came out of the goal and Edgar Degens tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. A collision led to Young Boys Enschede getting a freekick after 97 minutes play. Steve Bergmeester hit a great ball. After recieving a nice pass, FC Bruges's Antonio Eggers tried to score from far away in the 99th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. FC Bruges's supporters were dissatisfied at the end of the match because Young Boys Enschede had won, even though FC Bruges had held more of the ball.
