Arnaldo Toledo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Geovanni Maia, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Geovanni Maia could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 11th minute of the match, but Arnaldo Toledo made a huge save. 16 minutes into the match, Geovanni Maia had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Arnaldo Toledo. Fluminense Football Club's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Geovanni Maia was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-0. In the 22nd minute of the match GRÊMIO got a corner. Fluminense Football Club's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Roger Machado ran over to the corner to take the kick. When Roberto Fontes fell near the penalty area in the 23rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored GRÊMIO's protests and gave Roberto Fontes a yellow card for diving instead. Roberto Fontes hit a great freekick 23 minutes into the match. Arnaldo Toledo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Geovanni Maia, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 31 minutes, Geovanni Maia mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the GRÊMIO and the Fluminense Football Club players grew even worse after the yellow card. But to his dismay, Roberto Fontes quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-0. In the 42nd minute of the match Fluminense Football Club got a corner. GRÊMIO's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Elói de Queirós ran over to the corner to take the kick. Fluminense Football Club's Elói de Queirós was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Carlos Miguel in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Elpidio Gai's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Arnaldo Toledo firmly grabbed it by the left post.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Roberto Fontes was the one to do the kick off. An unexpectedly hard shot by Elpidio Gai in the 51st minute of play forced Fluminense Football Club's goalkeeper Arnaldo Toledo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Fluminense Football Club's Arnaldo Toledo played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Elpidio Gai in the 55th minute of play. Roberto Fontes hit a great freekick 59 minutes into the match. Arnaldo Toledo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Geovanni Maia in the 62nd minute of play. When the match clock showed 62 minutes, the score became 3-0 when Geovanni Maia sped through Fluminense Football Club's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Arnaldo Toledo. Arnaldo Toledo showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Geovanni Maia in the 66th minute of the match. Arnaldo Toledo came out of the goal in the 67th minute to try and stop a shot by GRÊMIO's Arí Terra. But to his dismay, Arí Terra quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 4-0. Fluminense Football Club's Frédson Amaral was substituted for Zeca Alagoano. 73 minutes into the match, Geovanni Maia notched a goal, 5-0, to the right of Fluminense Football Club's Arnaldo Toledo. Arnaldo Toledo was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. 81 minutes into the match, Fluminense Football Club's goal looked a bit too open when Roberto Fontes came free, but Arnaldo Toledo reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Gil Maciel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 82nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Elpidio Gai in the 86th minute of play forced Fluminense Football Club's goalkeeper Arnaldo Toledo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 89th minute, Geovanni Maia left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The GRÊMIO fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 6-0. Arnaldo Toledo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Roberto Fontes in the 93rd minute of play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Elpidio Gai during the 95th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After a rather tough play, GRÊMIO's Elpidio Gai got a free kick in the 95th minute. GRÊMIO's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
