When Bruninho Falcão came up free with the goalie in the 10th minute, the Garlic Eaters fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Bruninho Falcão couldn't finish the play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Gez Barber during the 13th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The supporters of Rot-Weiss-Essen booed when Garlic Eaters was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 13 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gez Barber didn't get a good kick on the ball. After recieving a nice pass, Rot-Weiss-Essen's Ebbo Böse tried to score from far away in the 14th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. Gul Keep made a fantastic save in the 16th minute, when Sandu Alexa sent off a good shot on target. After a rather tough play, Garlic Eaters's Gez Barber got a free kick in the 19th minute. In the 22nd minute, Sandu Alexa made a precise shot to the right of Gul Keep. Garlic Eaters's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-0. Through an outstanding action, after 25 minutes, Gul Keep successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. Rot-Weiss-Essen's Uwe Ziege played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bruninho Falcão in the 30th minute of play. Erkan Fostiropoulos fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 31st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Gul Keep having to interfere. With an all-out effort, Rot-Weiss-Essen's Gul Keep threw himself towards the right post 33 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Björn Mokros, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Bruninho Falcão kicked well hit freekick during the 37th minute of the match. A collision led to Garlic Eaters getting a freekick after 39 minutes play. Gez Barber hit a great ball. Sandu Alexa sent away a hard shot on goal in the 41st minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Gul Keep took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Sandu Alexa, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Erkan Fostiropoulos fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 42nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Gul Keep having to interfere. Albert Crawshaw kicked well hit freekick during the 43rd minute of the match. After 44 played minutes Erkan Fostiropoulos rounded Garlic Eaters's defense and shot a beautiful shot into goal via left pole - 2-0. In the 47th match minute, Rot-Weiss-Essen was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Helmut Malinowski to maneuver through the defense. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.
The wind increased when James Tuck made the kick off in the second half. James Tuck received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 52nd minute. Uwe Ziege tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Gul Keep made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Erkan Fostiropoulos in the 55th minute of play. Garlic Eaters's Gul Keep played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Erkan Fostiropoulos in the 57th minute of play. Gul Keep had in the 59thth minute some difficulties stopping Hannes Kapell's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball. 59 minutes into the match, Hannes Kapell had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Gul Keep. Garlic Eaters's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Hannes Kapell was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 3-0. If Sandu Alexa had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 63rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 65th minute Erkan Fostiropoulos shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gul Keep saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Gul Keep breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Erkan Fostiropoulos struck a weak shot in the 92nd minute. Gul Keep didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Rot-Weiss-Essen. In the 94th minute Sandu Alexa shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gul Keep saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Sandu Alexa in the 97th minute of play forced Garlic Eaters's goalkeeper Gul Keep to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Garlic Eaters's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
