The crowd rose to their feet as Alexandre Luz kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Rui Varela. That made the score 1-0 in the 15 minute of play. Grêmio FBPA's Rui Varela proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 18th minute of the match, managed to save Grêmio FBPA from getting a goal against them. In the 22nd minute, Celso Mendes hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 32nd minute Alexandre Luz shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rui Varela saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 40 minutes into the match, Grêmio FBPA's goal looked a bit too open when Sebastião Barbosa came free, but Rui Varela reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Sebastião Barbosa in the 47th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Rui Varela prevented the ball from getting in the gole. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.
