José Maria Carvalho made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ronaldo Pirani in the 8th minute of play. Palestra do Interior's Antônio Carlos Cavalcante played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jude Bellingham in the 14th minute of play. In the 15th minute, Lamine Yambao made a precise shot to the right of Antônio Carlos Cavalcante. Palestra do Interior's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. After 18 minutes of play, Clube Atlético Mineiro's Romário Ronaldo made it 0-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Antônio Carlos Cavalcante was left in no man's land by his defense there! 21 minutes into the match, Palestra do Interior's goal looked a bit too open when Alfredão da Costa came free, but Antônio Carlos Cavalcante reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 26th match minute, Palestra do Interior was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nelson Xavier to maneuver through the defense. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Jude Bellingham in the 27th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Antônio Carlos Cavalcante saved Palestra do Interior from getting behind. José Maria Carvalho made an important save on a dangerous shot by Nelson Xavier in the 41st minute. In the 44th minute, Raí Araújo hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After the first half Clube Atlético Mineiro were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Ronaldo Pirani was the one to do the kick off. José Maria Carvalho showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Nelson Xavier, who was totally free with the ball in the 52nd minute. Jude Bellingham scored 0-3 in the 55th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Antônio Carlos Cavalcante, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 58th match minute, Palestra do Interior was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Delfim Quintal to maneuver through the defense. The audience thought a goal was coming when Romário Ronaldo got free with Antônio Carlos Cavalcante in the 59th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. José Maria Carvalho showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ronaldo Pirani, who was totally free with the ball in the 61st minute. 62 minutes had been played when some careless play by Clube Atlético Mineiro's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Nelson Xavier was slow to take the kick. During this time Palestra do Interior's players had a chance to rest. The corner led Palestra do Interior's Nelson Xavier to fire away a dangerous shot which José Maria Carvalho despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Nelsinho Marinho scored 1-3 in the 65th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of José Maria Carvalho, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Ronaldo Pirani in the 70th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck José Maria Carvalho prevented the ball from getting in the gole. With a little luck, Palestra do Interior's Antônio Carlos Cavalcante got control of the ball when Romário Ronaldo tried to sneak it across the goal line. The supporters of Palestra do Interior booed when Clube Atlético Mineiro was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 73 match minutes in a wonderful position. Dalmo Ramos didn't get a good kick on the ball. 76 minutes into the match, Palestra do Interior's goal looked a bit too open when Romário Ronaldo came free, but Antônio Carlos Cavalcante reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ronaldo Pirani in the 93rd minute of play forced Clube Atlético Mineiro's goalkeeper José Maria Carvalho to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 96th minute, Jude Bellingham managed to get in a good position for a shot. Clube Atlético Mineiro's supporters rose to their feet, but Jude Bellingham was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Antônio Carlos Cavalcante breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
