An unexpectedly hard shot by Adhemar Teles in the 3rd minute of play forced Rot-Weiss-Essen's goalkeeper Simeon Plank to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Phoenix Fc's Luís Fábio Bezerra played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Elmar Assing in the 7th minute of play. Luís Fábio Bezerra made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Elmar Assing in the 10th minute of play. Phoenix Fc's attentive Luís Fabiano da Silveira managed to snatch the ball when Helmut Malinowski made a throw-in in the 12th minute of the game. Adhemar Teles charged in rather forcefully in the 13th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Adhemar Teles the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. A collision led to Phoenix Fc getting a freekick after 13 minutes play. Adhemar Teles hit a great ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Erkan Fostiropoulos in the 15th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Luís Fábio Bezerra prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 16th minute Elmar Assing shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Luís Fábio Bezerra saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Simeon Plank made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Luís Fabiano da Silveira in the 18th minute of play. After some careless play in the Phoenix Fc defense, Erkan Fostiropoulos kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Luís Fábio Bezerra. The Phoenix Fc fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Luís Fábio Bezerra should have stopped the shot. After 24 played minutes Phoenix Fc got a freekick which was hit by Rubinho Lucas. Luís Fábio Bezerra took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Björn Mokros, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Luís Fábio Bezerra showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Björn Mokros in the 27th minute of the match. Elmar Assing might have been able to make a better finish in the 29th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Luís Fábio Bezerra. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Elmar Assing ran back to his position shaking his head. Luís Fábio Bezerra showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Erkan Fostiropoulos in the 34th minute of the match. Sidney Pombal might have been able to make a better finish in the 42nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Simeon Plank. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Sidney Pombal ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 44th minute, Ebbo Böse hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Simeon Plank showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Adhemar Teles, who was totally free with the ball in the 47th minute.

The wind increased when Erkan Fostiropoulos made the kick off in the second half. Adhemar Teles struck a weak shot in the 50th minute. Simeon Plank didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Phoenix Fc. After 57 minutes, Sidney Pombal mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Phoenix Fc and the Rot-Weiss-Essen players grew even worse after the yellow card. A collision led to Phoenix Fc getting a freekick after 57 minutes play. Sidney Pombal hit a great ball. 60 minutes into the game, Ruth Jahnke was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Rot-Weiss-Essen's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Phoenix Fc the free kick. In the 66th minute, Adhemar Teles got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 69th minute Björn Mokros shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Luís Fábio Bezerra saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a rather tough play, Phoenix Fc's Sidney Pombal got a free kick in the 70th minute. In the 71st minute, one of Phoenix Fc:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Phoenix Fc. In the 75th minute, Erkan Fostiropoulos fired away a killer shot towards the goal that, to the delight of Luís Fábio Bezerra, passed just outside the right post. Phoenix Fc's Eriberto Mazza was substituted for Ronaldo Camargo. 78 minutes into the match, Rot-Weiss-Essen's goal looked a bit too open when Adhemar Teles came free, but Simeon Plank reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Helmut Malinowski made in the 87th minute of the game a sloppy throw-in which Maurizio Brink however managed to control. After 89 played minutes Rot-Weiss-Essen got a freekick which was hit by Helmut Malinowski. In the 90th minute of the match Betão Azevedo sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Simeon Plank skillfully saved the ball. Helmut Malinowski made in the 92nd minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Björn Mokros. In the 94th minute the ball was on its way in behind Phoenix Fc's goalkeeper Luís Fábio Bezerra, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. The supporters of Phoenix Fc booed when Rot-Weiss-Essen was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 95 match minutes in a wonderful position. Erkan Fostiropoulos didn't get a good kick on the ball. The Phoenix Fc manager could be seen shouting at his players as they walked down the tunnel after the match. He was clearly angry that they had squandered their superior possession, allowing Rot-Weiss-Essen to win.
