Amador Gustau kicked well hit freekick during the 3rd minute of the match. When Guaberto Chorche fell near the penalty area in the 12th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Independiente's protests and gave Guaberto Chorche a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to Independiente getting a freekick after 12 minutes play. Guaberto Chorche hit a great ball. In the 15th minute, Venancio Vedillo hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Mariano Gorosti could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 20th minute of the match, but Nilson Dracena made a huge save. Nilson Dracena made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Mariano Gorosti in the 23rd minute of play. 24 minutes into the match, SE Palmeiras's goalkeeper Nilson Dracena had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Arnulfo Lehen. 26 minutes into the match, SE Palmeiras's goalkeeper Nilson Dracena had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Guaberto Chorche. Nestor Erdiano hit a great freekick 30 minutes into the match. After some fancy dribbling in the 40th minute, Mariano Gorosti managed to get in a good position for a shot. Independiente's supporters rose to their feet, but Mariano Gorosti was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Nilson Dracena breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 44th minute of the match, Nestor Erdiano tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Nilson Dracena saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Mariano Gorosti during the 46th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 46 played minutes Independiente got a freekick which was hit by Mariano Gorosti. The score stood at 0-0 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Guaberto Chorche made a kick off. In the 51st match minute, SE Palmeiras was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Dito Donatello to maneuver through the defense. SE Palmeiras's Nilson Dracena played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Nestor Erdiano in the 54th minute of play. Nilson Dracena came out of the goal in the 56th minute to try and stop a shot by Independiente's Nestor Erdiano. But to his dismay, Nestor Erdiano quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-0. Oswaldo Godoi was extremely unlucky when he, in the 67th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. Guaberto Chorche sent away a hard shot on goal in the 70th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a defensive mix-up in SE Palmeiras's zone, Guaberto Chorche stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Nilson Dracena came out of the goal and Guaberto Chorche tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Jaime Havier took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Basílio do Valle, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Jose Giraldo's late challenge caught a SE Palmeiras's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Jose Giraldo helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Independiente's Jose Giraldo got a free kick in the 80th minute. Basílio do Valle hit a great freekick 87 minutes into the match. Independiente's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
