Through an outstanding action, after 5 minutes, Herb Good successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. In the 6th minute of the match Sporting de Gijón got a corner. Sport Lisboa e Benfica's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Saturnino Curcio ran over to the corner to take the kick. Matias Bilintxs short, quick shot in the 9thth minute got Herb Good to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. The audience was convinced that Matias Bilintx's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Herb Good was relentless in the 9th minute of the game. Sporting de Gijón's Denis Bonadona got a good chance for a goal in the 11th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Jean Britton's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Dante Fernendo read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 23rd minute of play. In the 27th minute, Jacinto Vela hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Herb Good showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Saturnino Curcio, who was totally free with the ball in the 29th minute. After 30 minutes Sport Lisboa e Benfica's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Saturnino Curcio who took care of the corner kick. The corner led to Sporting de Gijón's Alejandro Rufo getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. Matias Bilintx had several of the Sport Lisboa e Benfica's defenders around him in the penalty area when he, after 36 minutes of play, received a pass and succeeded in some way to shoot a shot which went straight ahead into goal. This resulted in a 1-0 score and a disappointed Herb Good as he didn't even see the shot coming. A collision led to Sport Lisboa e Benfica getting a freekick after 43 minutes play. Rainier Steiner hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jean Britton in the 45th minute of play forced Sporting de Gijón's goalkeeper Dante Fernendo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 46 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goal looked a bit too open when Jean Britton came free, but Dante Fernendo reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 1-0.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Jean Britton to strike the kick off in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Matias Bilintx got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Jean Britton sent away a hard shot on goal in the 95th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. For all the effort they put into the match, the Sport Lisboa e Benfica players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for Sporting de Gijón.
