After a rather tough play, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's Herbert Björnberg got a free kick in the 9th minute. 17 minutes into the match, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's goal looked a bit too open when Faas Wilkes came free, but Zafer Hürsel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Emmanuel Dennis had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 45th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Håkan Kjellman stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. When Jörgen Ekeroth fell near the penalty area in the 51st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's protests and gave Jörgen Ekeroth a yellow card for diving instead. After 54 minutes of play, Vykans Vikingar's Faas Wilkes made it 2-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Zafer Hürsel was left in no man's land by his defense there!
