In the 13th match minute, S.E.R. Caxias do Sul was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ricardinho de Senna to maneuver through the defense. Lucio Siekkötter fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 17th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Denis Inautzi having to interfere. S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's Lei Feng Yan got a good chance for a goal in the 20th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Lucio Siekkötter recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 24th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Esen Sanal showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Roman Garci, who was totally free with the ball in the 28th minute. Esen Sanal made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Andrej Golota in the 29th minute of play. Milan Baroš's late challenge caught a S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Milan Baroš helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of S.E.R. Caxias do Sul booed when Newell´s was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 30 match minutes in a wonderful position. Milan Baroš didn't get a good kick on the ball. Thanks to some nice moves Renato Augusto could shoot a difficult shot in the 33rd minute, which Denis Inautzi however easily saved by the left post. Esen Sanal showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Roman Garci in the 43rd minute of the match. After a defensive mix-up in Newell´s's zone, Krisztián Véber stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Denis Inautzi came out of the goal and Krisztián Véber tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Roman Garci to strike the kick off in the second half. Esen Sanal stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Roman Garci's shot from short distance in the 55th minute. Newell´s's Baldomiro Pierres was substituted for Enzo Haritz. Newell´s's Fermin Etxeberri was substituted for Andrej Golota. Esen Sanal showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Fermin Etxeberri, who was totally free with the ball in the 65th minute.
