In the 23rd minute Gijsbert ter Kruimer shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Edvard Fagerberg saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The supporters of Netherlands booed when Commander Crowe was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 24 match minutes in a wonderful position. Peter Örtendahl didn't get a good kick on the ball. Wim Wilmes received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 45th minute. Edvard Fagerberg tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 47th minute, Roy Andreasson hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Umberto Nunes to strike the kick off in the second half. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lars Meesters got free with Edvard Fagerberg in the 57th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Gustaaf Groeneveldt could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 64th minute of the match, but Edvard Fagerberg made a huge save. Edvard Fagerberg made an important save on a dangerous shot by Gustaaf Groeneveldt in the 66th minute. After 67 minutes Commander Crowe's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Gijsbert ter Kruimer who took care of the corner kick. Gustaaf Groeneveldt sent away a hard shot on goal in the 91st minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Ondino Asenjo kicked well hit freekick during the 91st minute of the match. The supporters of Commander Crowe booed when Netherlands was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 96 match minutes in a wonderful position. Egbert Nijveldt didn't get a good kick on the ball. Commander Crowe's Bengt-Arne Håkansson got a good chance for a goal in the 97th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Netherlands's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
