The referee ignored Perez Zeledon's protests and gave Willie Mendez a yellow card for diving instead. The supporters of Mal pais AFC booed when Perez Zeledon was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 11 match minutes in a wonderful position. Willie Mendez didn't get a good kick on the ball. Diego Jara, 12 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. Pablo Alfaro's late challenge caught a Mal pais AFC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Pablo Alfaro helped the player get up and apologised. If Felix Arias had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 28th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The audience was convinced that Aurelio Mena's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Herberto Centeno was relentless in the 43rd minute of the game. Perez Zeledon's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Alonzo Guadamuz in the 47th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 77th minute, Warner Saenz managed to get in a good position for a shot. Mal pais AFC's supporters rose to their feet, but Warner Saenz was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Herberto Centeno breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Anselmo Oses struck a weak shot in the 83rd minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Warner Saenz in the 94th minute of play forced Perez Zeledon's goalkeeper Herberto Centeno to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball.
