Wilmer Orlich showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Leonel Alpizar, who was totally free with the ball in the 11th minute. A collision led to San Carlos AFC getting a freekick after 12 minutes play. Guillermo Williams hit a great ball. If Rodolfo Reyes had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 18th minute. When Minor Naranjo was, once again, overly rough in his play he received his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. 24 minutes had been played. In the 26th minute the ball was on its way in behind San Carlos AFC's goalkeeper Wilmer Orlich, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 27th minute Leonel Alpizar shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Wilmer Orlich saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Leonel Alpizar in the 30th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Wilmer Orlich saved San Carlos AFC from getting behind. 32 minutes into the match, Atenas's goalkeeper Romulo Lozano had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Rodolfo Reyes. After having played for 34 minutes, Ronald Huetar managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Atenas's supporters crossed their fingers, but Ronald Huetar was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 35 minutes into the match, San Carlos AFC's goal looked a bit too open when Leonel Alpizar came free, but Wilmer Orlich reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 40th minute, Rodolfo Reyes left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The San Carlos AFC fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-0. An unexpected shot in the 45th minute by Rodolfo Reyes got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The wind increased when Leonel Alpizar made the kick off in the second half. If Ronald Huetar had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 53rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 59 played minutes San Carlos AFC got a freekick which was hit by Edwin Carvajal. With an all-out effort, Atenas's Wilmer Orlich threw himself towards the right post 61 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Leonel Alpizar, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. San Carlos AFC's Edwin Carvajal got a good chance for a goal in the 68th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Rodolfo Reyes sent away a hard shot on goal in the 70th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After some fancy dribbling in the 74th minute, Rodolfo Reyes managed to get in a good position for a shot. San Carlos AFC's supporters rose to their feet, but Rodolfo Reyes was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Romulo Lozano breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. An unexpectedly hard shot by Leonel Alpizar in the 79th minute of play forced San Carlos AFC's goalkeeper Wilmer Orlich to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 81st minute Leonel Alpizar shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Wilmer Orlich saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Leonel Alpizar fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 83rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Wilmer Orlich having to interfere. When the match had gone on for 86 minutes, Leonel Alpizar took a quick shot and it went in 1-1 without a chance for Wilmer Orlich to make any attempt to save it. Leonel Bermudez kicked well hit freekick during the 90th minute of the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Ronald Huetar got free with Wilmer Orlich in the 97th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Both teams had looked equal from kick-off, and no-one was surprised when the match finally ended in a draw.
