After 20 played minutes Deportivo Universitario got a freekick which was hit by Emanuel Castro. Jose Chavez made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ivan Briceño in the 28th minute of play. Emanuel Jaen sent away a hard shot on goal in the 43rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Deportivo Universitario's Mario Quirós played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Fabio González in the 46th minute of play. After the first half Cerro Punta were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Luis Corral stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. With a little luck, Deportivo Universitario's Mario Quirós got control of the ball when Luis Corral tried to sneak it across the goal line. 58 minutes into the game, Heraclides Rios was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Cerro Punta's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Deportivo Universitario the free kick. Fabio González might have been able to make a better finish in the 74th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Mario Quirós. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Fabio González ran back to his position shaking his head. Luis Corral fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 78th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mario Quirós having to interfere. After a rather tough play, Deportivo Universitario's Azael García got a free kick in the 79th minute. 80 minutes into the match, Cerro Punta's Fabio González sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Mario Quirós narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Mario Quirós made an important save on a dangerous shot by Fabio González in the 83rd minute. In the 86th minute, Luis Corral got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. With his leg Mario Quirós managed to avoid a goal in the 90thth minute, when Cerro Punta's Fabio González fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side.
