In the 19th minute, Rolando Sánchez hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The crowd rose to their feet as Juan Ríos kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Mario Pérez. That made the score 1-0 in the 23 minute of play. Nicolás Quirós hit a great freekick 25 minutes into the match. Gustavo Ortega's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Mario Pérez read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 27th minute of play. If Gustavo Ortega had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 29th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a defensive mix-up in María Chiquita's zone, Juan Ríos stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Mario Pérez came out of the goal and Juan Ríos tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 32nd minute, Gustavo Ortega managed to get in a good position for a shot. Isla Caña's supporters rose to their feet, but Gustavo Ortega was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Mario Pérez breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Juan Ríos sent away a hard shot on goal in the 43rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 45 minutes into the match, Isla Caña's goal looked a bit too open when Leonidas Garcia came free, but Jose Castro reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Isla Caña's players enjoyed the ovations of the crowd after the victory.
