Oriche Trejo came free with the goalkeeper in the 36th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Romildo Helguero could save by the left post. With a little luck, Cañoneros club's Romildo Helguero got control of the ball when Oriche Trejo tried to sneak it across the goal line. Santikurtz Carreira sent away a hard shot on goal in the 39th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. In the 40th minute Mouricio Bugedo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Romildo Helguero saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 41 minutes into the game, United States's Atarratze Imaz nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Romildo Helguero made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-1. Romildo Helguero showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Mouricio Bugedo, who was totally free with the ball in the 47th minute. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Ruy Piedeconcha stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. United States's supporters crossed their fingers, but Santikurtz Carreira was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. It was no surprise that this one had ended in a win for the home team. United States had played much better football throughout.
