Denny Jacobs charged in rather forcefully in the 16th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. In the 24th minute the ball was on its way in behind St. Marys's goalkeeper Kent Willoughby, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. After having played for 25 minutes, Waylon Hufnagel managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Irmo's supporters crossed their fingers, but Waylon Hufnagel was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in St. Marys's zone, Lionel Miller stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Kent Willoughby came out of the goal and Lionel Miller tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Louis Henry hit a great freekick 29 minutes into the match. Kent Willoughby made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Lionel Miller in the 32nd minute of play. In the 34th minute, Waylon Hufnagel hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Irmo's Waylon Hufnagel got a good chance for a goal in the 38th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. If Waylon Hufnagel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 41st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Lionel Miller in the 47th minute of play forced St. Marys's goalkeeper Kent Willoughby to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Darryl Hagen was the one to do the kick off. 54 minutes into the game, Darnell Banning was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. The audience was convinced that Waylon Hufnagel's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Kent Willoughby was relentless in the 60th minute of the game. After some fancy dribbling in the 62nd minute, Waylon Hufnagel managed to get in a good position for a shot. Irmo's supporters rose to their feet, but Waylon Hufnagel was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Kent Willoughby breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 69th minute Darryl Hagen shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rey Costello saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Kent Willoughby made a fantastic save in the 75th minute, when Lionel Miller sent off a good shot on target. Waylon Hufnagel received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 76th minute. Kent Willoughby tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere.
