An unexpectedly hard shot by Johnathan Galvan in the 34th minute of play forced San José State University's goalkeeper Tobias Hays to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A collision led to San José State University getting a freekick after 34 minutes play. Lane Garland hit a great ball. In the 37th minute, San José State University's Graham Barrett seemed to kick out at an opponent. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Graham Barrett the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of San José State University protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Graham Barrett had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. After 37 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for San José State University! Tobias Hays tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. DeMarcus Aldrich showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Calvin Maddox, who was totally free with the ball in the 88th minute. 89 minutes into the match, Newells Old Boys's goal looked a bit too open when Korey Bain came free, but DeMarcus Aldrich reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. DeMarcus Aldrich made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Calvin Maddox in the 91st minute of play. After a defensive mix-up in San José State University's zone, Johnathan Galvan stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Tobias Hays came out of the goal and Johnathan Galvan tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Newells Old Boys had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
