Hans Phipps came out of the goal and Conrad Craven tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 42nd minute, Conrad Craven managed to get in a good position for a shot. Holly AFC's supporters rose to their feet, but Conrad Craven was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Hans Phipps breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

Holly AFC's Del Sheppard got a good chance for a goal in the 57th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Hans Phipps made an important save on a dangerous shot by Del Sheppard in the 60th minute. Del Sheppard fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 65th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Hans Phipps having to interfere. Randy Cooke might have been able to make a better finish in the 73rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Lloyd Webb. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Randy Cooke ran back to his position shaking his head. Conrad Craven struck a weak shot in the 86th minute. Hans Phipps didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Holly AFC. After a rather tough play, United States's Silas Herndon got a free kick in the 87th minute. Francis Bocanegra charged in rather forcefully in the 89th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Francis Bocanegra the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 89th match minute, United States was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Francis Bocanegra to maneuver through the defense. After 92 minutes, Silas Herndon mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the United States and the Holly AFC players grew even worse after the yellow card.
