The supporters of West Homestead booed when Staples AFC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 11 match minutes in a wonderful position. Douglass Goodwin didn't get a good kick on the ball. Ted Dempsey fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 19th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Leon Fontenot having to interfere. In the 22nd minute, Nelson Carbajal hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Claudio Roper's late challenge caught a Staples AFC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. A very good chance. 45 minutes into the match, West Homestead's goal looked a bit too open when Stanton Barney came free, but Leon Fontenot reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a rather tough play, West Homestead's Nelson Carbajal got a free kick in the 46th minute. Dave Vernon was probably a little too eager to shoot when he, in the 47th played minute, shot the ball from way out. The shot was hard, but the ball flew wide of the goal. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Aldo Lozano blasted a shot towards the goal in the 53rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Leon Fontenot having to make a save. The Staples AFC fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. In the 67th minute, Ted Dempsey got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The audience was convinced that Ted Dempsey's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Leon Fontenot was relentless in the 72nd minute of the game.
