The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Mount Vernon AFC's Odell Carrier played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Virgil Sizemore in the 4th minute of play. After 7 minutes of play, Mount Vernon AFC's Jeff Britton made it 0-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Tory Blue was left in no man's land by his defense there! Salvatore Rucker fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 11th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Odell Carrier having to interfere. If Virgil Sizemore had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 14th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Odell Carrier made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Marvin Lentz in the 17th minute of play. When SJ Earthquakes's Marvin Lentz in the 19th minute got a chance for a shot 19th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. Virgil Sizemore scored 1-1 in the 24th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Odell Carrier, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. If Marvin Lentz had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 28th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Salvatore Rucker received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 30th minute. Odell Carrier tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 31 minutes, Kareem Herman mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Mount Vernon AFC and the SJ Earthquakes players grew even worse after the yellow card. Kareem Herman kicked well hit freekick during the 31st minute of the match. A hard shot 34 in the game by Virgil Sizemore from a close distance when the talented Odell Carrier managed to make a qualified save. Mount Vernon AFC's players were relieved. Johnathon Case blasted a shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Odell Carrier having to make a save. SJ Earthquakes's Virgil Sizemore got a good chance for a goal in the 39th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 44 minutes into the match, Mount Vernon AFC's goalkeeper Odell Carrier had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Virgil Sizemore. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The wind increased when Jeff Britton made the kick off in the second half. Jeff Britton received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 53rd minute. Tory Blue tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Virgil Sizemore sent away a hard shot on goal in the 56th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 68 minutes into the game, Jeff Britton recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Tory Blue. Jeff Britton showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-2. Virgil Sizemore sent away a hard shot on goal in the 71st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 74 minutes into the match, SJ Earthquakes's Salvatore Rucker sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Odell Carrier narrowly saved just below the crossbar. SJ Earthquakes's Marvin Lentz got a good chance for a goal in the 76th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Salvatore Rucker struck a weak shot in the 80th minute. Odell Carrier didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for SJ Earthquakes. Virgil Sizemore sent away a hard shot on goal in the 83rd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Virgil Sizemore fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 84th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Odell Carrier having to interfere. After some careless play in the Mount Vernon AFC defense, Virgil Sizemore kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Odell Carrier. The Mount Vernon AFC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Odell Carrier should have stopped the shot. After some fancy dribbling in the 89th minute, Marvin Lentz managed to get in a good position for a shot. SJ Earthquakes's supporters rose to their feet, but Marvin Lentz was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Odell Carrier breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After a defensive mix-up in Mount Vernon AFC's zone, Virgil Sizemore stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Odell Carrier came out of the goal and Virgil Sizemore tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The supporters of SJ Earthquakes booed when Mount Vernon AFC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 93 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cary Ramey didn't get a good kick on the ball. Virgil Sizemore fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 95th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Odell Carrier having to interfere. When the referee blew the final whistle, you could see the dissatisfaction in the SJ Earthquakes players' eyes. They were disappointed they hadn't taken more from the game.
