After 11 played minutes, Atlanta FC's Malcolm Mack shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Kenneth Joyner came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Atlanta FC reached it. The audience was convinced that Brad Robles's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Kenneth Joyner was relentless in the 12th minute of the game. Eric Tripp sent away a hard shot on goal in the 14th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. With an all-out effort, Carbondale FC's Foster Patterson threw himself towards the right post 15 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Tad Dodson, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Derick Langford sent away a hard shot on goal in the 19th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. A collision led to Atlanta FC getting a freekick after 23 minutes play. Ken Hartman hit a great ball. Brad Robles recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 28th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Eric Tripp in the 33rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Kenneth Joyner saved Carbondale FC from getting behind. In the 33rd minute, Harvey Barrera hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

In the 52nd minute the ball was on its way in behind Atlanta FC's goalkeeper Foster Patterson, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 53rd match minute, Atlanta FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Dana Countess to maneuver through the defense. Ken Hartman hit a great freekick 54 minutes into the match. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Rolf Dozier during the 59th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 72nd minute, Eric Tripp made a precise shot to the right of Kenneth Joyner. Carbondale FC's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. In the 75th minute, Shaun Arredondo hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The supporters of Carbondale FC booed when Atlanta FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 85 match minutes in a wonderful position. Malcolm Mack didn't get a good kick on the ball. When Derick Langford came up free with the goalie in the 86th minute, the Carbondale FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Derick Langford couldn't finish the play. Atlanta FC's Foster Patterson played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Tad Dodson in the 89th minute of play. After a rather tough play, Atlanta FC's Eric Tripp got a free kick in the 92nd minute. 94 minutes into the match, Atlanta FC's goal looked a bit too open when Derick Langford came free, but Foster Patterson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Atlanta FC's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
