FC Sao Porto's Teddy Rhoades played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by German Smiley in the 17th minute of play. In the 19th minute Derrick Mason shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Teddy Rhoades saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Denis Lake fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 23rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Sherwood Drake having to interfere. Jerry Conn sent away a hard shot on goal in the 26th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. After a rather tough play, FC Sao Porto's Jerry Conn got a free kick in the 29th minute. Sherwood Drake made an important save on a dangerous shot by Denis Lake in the 32nd minute. Denis Lake fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 33rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Sherwood Drake having to interfere. Denis Lake's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Sherwood Drake firmly grabbed it by the left post. Gilberto Vick hit a great freekick 39 minutes into the match. After having played for 43 minutes, Denis Lake managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FC Sao Porto's supporters crossed their fingers, but Denis Lake was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 46 minutes into the match, Sheffield Wednesday's goalkeeper Sherwood Drake had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Denis Lake. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for German Smiley to strike the kick off in the second half. After 53 played minutes FC Sao Porto got a freekick which was hit by Gilberto Vick. After 77 played minutes, FC Sao Porto's Wade Lovell shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Sherwood Drake came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in FC Sao Porto reached it. Sherwood Drake made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Neil Owens in the 80th minute of play. In the 81st minute, Hunter Barron hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Neil Owens had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 86th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Sherwood Drake made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Neil Owens in the 90th minute of play. There were very few away supporters still in the ground by the end of the match. Most of them had left early, disgusted by the way their team had been torn apart. FC Sao Porto fully deserved thier win.
