Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Richie Keys made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Archie Vance in the 7th minute of play. If Archie Vance had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 8th minute. Richie Keys was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The referee felt a red card was in order, 22 minutes into the game, when Emilio Rector put in a rough tackle. Mel Payne went to the wrong direction when Olin Zimmer was taking care of the penalty kick which however missed the goal. Bailey Wooten sent away a hard shot on goal in the 30th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. With an all-out effort, Charles City's Mel Payne threw himself towards the right post 39 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Bailey Wooten, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Stanford Bowling's late challenge caught a Charles City's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. After the first half Long Beach Sharks FC were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Bailey Wooten couldn't finish the play.
