The referee ignored Deportivo Mérida's protests and gave Lander Solabarrieta a yellow card for diving instead. Luis María Lastarria fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jose Miguel Monge having to interfere. Deportivo Mérida's Pío Popelaire proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 43rd minute of the match, managed to save Deportivo Mérida from getting a goal against them. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

In the 54th minute, Jon-Ander Arata got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. But to his dismay, Carlos Gustavo Asmussen quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Jon-Ander Arata might have been able to make a better finish in the 63rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Pío Popelaire. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Jon-Ander Arata ran back to his position shaking his head. Diego Montesinos scored 1-1 in the 65th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Pío Popelaire, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Martin Castañeda kicked well hit freekick during the 69th minute of the match. 72 minutes into the match, Viluyo AFC's Diego Montesinos sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Pío Popelaire narrowly saved just below the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jon-Ander Arata in the 79th minute of play forced Deportivo Mérida's goalkeeper Pío Popelaire to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 83rd minute, Diego Montesinos ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Pío Popelaire was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-1. After having played for 87 minutes, Carlos Gustavo Asmussen managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Deportivo Mérida's supporters crossed their fingers, but Carlos Gustavo Asmussen was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Luis María Lastarria sent away a hard shot on goal in the 99th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Deportivo Mérida's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
