But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Homer Brand couldn't finish the play. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 13th minute of the game. One of Axe Team:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Brancepeth FC:s goal. Basil Simard shot the penalty kick right outside the post. 16 minutes into the match, Axe Team's goalkeeper Eric Gareau had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Marquis Mallory. Hans Dupéré sent away a hard shot on goal in the 19th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Marquis Mallory received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 22nd minute. Eric Gareau tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Quinn Sands showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Hans Dupéré, who was totally free with the ball in the 34th minute. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.
