After having played for 14 minutes, Andy Sexton managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Newport Park's supporters crossed their fingers, but Andy Sexton was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 15th minute, Jean Oleary made a precise shot to the right of Cesar Mailly. Toronto FC's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-2. An unexpectedly hard shot by Andy Sexton in the 18th minute of play forced Toronto FC's goalkeeper Cesar Mailly to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Jean Oleary sent away a hard shot on goal in the 20th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Papillion Coyle came up free with the goalie in the 21st minute, the Toronto FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Papillion Coyle couldn't finish the play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Billie Robles got free with Tom Biggs in the 23rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 33rd minute, Junior Beaupré left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Newport Park fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-3. 37 minutes into the match, Toronto FC's goal looked a bit too open when Andy Sexton came free, but Cesar Mailly reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Andy Sexton succeeded in the game's 38th minute to shoot an unreachable shot under the crossbar and scored - 1-4. After some careless play in the Toronto FC defense, Andy Sexton kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Cesar Mailly. The Toronto FC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Cesar Mailly should have stopped the shot. After the first half Newport Park were leading 1-5. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Rodger Hendrickson's late challenge caught a Newport Park's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Rodger Hendrickson helped the player get up and apologised. In the 51st match minute, Toronto FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Rodger Hendrickson to maneuver through the defense. When Jean Oleary came up free with the goalie in the 64th minute, the Newport Park fans jumped to their feet. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 78th minute Jean Oleary shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Cesar Mailly saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Newport Park's Jean Oleary got a good chance for a goal in the 81st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jean Oleary in the 85th minute of play forced Toronto FC's goalkeeper Cesar Mailly to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Jean Oleary might have been able to make a better finish in the 86th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Cesar Mailly. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Jean Oleary ran back to his position shaking his head. After some fancy dribbling in the 92nd minute, Andy Sexton managed to get in a good position for a shot. Newport Park's supporters rose to their feet, but Andy Sexton was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Cesar Mailly breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 96th minute, Andy Sexton ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Cesar Mailly was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-8.
