But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Herbert Rossi couldn't finish the play. 9 minutes into the match, Morrisburg Lions's goal looked a bit too open when Emory Richmond came free, but Cruz Lockett reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Todd Laux charged in rather forcefully in the 10th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Todd Laux the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 11th minute Emory Richmond shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Cruz Lockett saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Emory Richmond's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Cruz Lockett read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 14th minute of play. In the 16th minute Toronto FC were awarded a corner. Rick Elder went to the cornerflag to take it. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Emory Richmond in the 27th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Cruz Lockett saved Morrisburg Lions from getting behind. After 29 minutes Morrisburg Lions's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Rick Elder who took care of the corner kick. It was a well-played corner which Emory Richmond managed to volley towards the net. Unfortunately, he didn't get a great hit on the ball and it went out into the grandstand. When Patrick Oconnell fell near the penalty area in the 31st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Morrisburg Lions's protests and gave Patrick Oconnell a yellow card for diving instead. The supporters of Toronto FC booed when Morrisburg Lions was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 31 match minutes in a wonderful position. Patrick Oconnell didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a defensive mix-up in Morrisburg Lions's zone, Emory Richmond stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Cruz Lockett came out of the goal and Emory Richmond tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 35th match minute, Morrisburg Lions was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Todd Laux to maneuver through the defense. A collision led to Toronto FC getting a freekick after 37 minutes play. Max Darby hit a great ball. Emory Richmond blasted a shot towards the goal in the 41st minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Cruz Lockett having to make a save. An unexpectedly hard shot by Emory Richmond in the 41st minute of play forced Morrisburg Lions's goalkeeper Cruz Lockett to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 43rdth minute of the game Emory Richmond who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Morrisburg Lions's Cruz Lockett was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Rubén-Darío Insúa kicked well hit freekick during the 45th minute of the match. If Emory Richmond had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 47th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Cruz Lockett made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Emory Richmond in the 47th minute of play. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The audience thought a goal was coming when Emory Richmond got free with Cruz Lockett in the 59th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Cruz Lockett made a fantastic save in the 67th minute, when Emory Richmond sent off a good shot on target. If Emory Richmond had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 71st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Cruz Lockett was a little too slow when Emory Richmond got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 75th minute. The score was now 0-1. Max Darby sent away a hard shot on goal in the 80th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Emory Richmond in the 81st minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Cruz Lockett prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Toronto FC's Emory Richmond was standing unmarked in front of the goal when he, in the 81st play minute, got the ball and easily drilled it into the goal. Emory Richmond might have been able to make a better finish in the 85th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Cruz Lockett. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Emory Richmond ran back to his position shaking his head. Cruz Lockett showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Emory Richmond, who was totally free with the ball in the 85th minute. Cruz Lockett was a little too slow when Emory Richmond got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 86th minute. The score was now 0-3. With a little luck, Morrisburg Lions's Cruz Lockett got control of the ball when Emory Richmond tried to sneak it across the goal line. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Toronto FC walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
