The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. 13 minutes into the match, Vancouver Whitecaps FC's goal looked a bit too open when Erik Hinton came free, but Maynard Boone reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Art Salmons fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 14th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Maynard Boone having to interfere. A collision led to Vancouver Whitecaps FC getting a freekick after 17 minutes play. Stan Quinones hit a great ball. In the 20th play minute Yann Hobbs came free and shot an unsuspected shot which went into goal from the right pole behind a surprised Maynard Boone. 1-0. The supporters of Vancouver Whitecaps FC booed when MURGASH was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 24 match minutes in a wonderful position. Olen Zamora didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 29th minute of the match Mark Carlton shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Maynard Boone showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Mauro Childers hit a great freekick 32 minutes into the match. In the 33rd minute, Nestor Huard made a precise shot to the right of Joel Boswell. MURGASH's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. Erik Hintons short, quick shot in the 42ndth minute got Maynard Boone to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Lino Mason in the 45th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Joel Boswell prevented the ball from getting in the gole. When Nestor Huard came up free with the goalie in the 47th minute, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Nestor Huard couldn't finish the play. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Lino Mason was the one to do the kick off. An unexpectedly hard shot by Art Salmons in the 53rd minute of play forced Vancouver Whitecaps FC's goalkeeper Maynard Boone to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The Vancouver Whitecaps FC players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
