If Erasmo Gaspar had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 18th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Gugu Linares might have been able to make a better finish in the 22nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Ulisses Alvarenga. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Gugu Linares ran back to his position shaking his head. Ulisses Alvarenga made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Júlio Rosa in the 23rd minute of play. Júlio Rosa fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 24th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ulisses Alvarenga having to interfere. Júlio Rosa recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 26th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Erasmo Gaspar fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 28th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Samuca Gaúcho having to interfere. A collision led to Gaúcho F.C. getting a freekick after 29 minutes play. Gugu Linares hit a great ball. Gugu Linares's late challenge caught a C.M. Progresso Paulista's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Gugu Linares helped the player get up and apologised. Gugu Linares kicked well hit freekick during the 30th minute of the match. After recieving a nice pass, C.M. Progresso Paulista's Dinei Furlan tried to score from far away in the 31st minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. After some fancy dribbling in the 35th minute, Pedro Luiz Fernandes managed to get in a good position for a shot. C.M. Progresso Paulista's supporters rose to their feet, but Pedro Luiz Fernandes was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Samuca Gaúcho breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After having played for 37 minutes, José Augusto Amorim managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. C.M. Progresso Paulista's supporters crossed their fingers, but José Augusto Amorim was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in C.M. Progresso Paulista's zone, Júlio Rosa stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Ulisses Alvarenga came out of the goal and Júlio Rosa tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. When Júlio Rosa came up free with the goalie in the 40th minute, the Gaúcho F.C. fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Júlio Rosa couldn't finish the play. Júlio Rosa received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 41st minute. Ulisses Alvarenga tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. If Júlio Rosa had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 42nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Ulisses Alvarenga was a little too slow when Gugu Linares got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 44th minute. The score was now 1-0. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

In the 56th minute Pedro Luiz Fernandes shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Samuca Gaúcho saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 65 minutes into the match, Gaúcho F.C.'s goalkeeper Samuca Gaúcho had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Erasmo Gaspar. Progresso Paulista's José Augusto Amorim got a good chance for a goal in the 69th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After a rather tough play, Gaúcho F.C.'s Gugu Linares got a free kick in the 90th minute. Erasmo Gaspar took the ball and in the 95 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Samuca Gaúcho. Samuca Gaúcho dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1.
