Durvalino Fonseca showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Roberto Azevedo, who was totally free with the ball in the 14th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Júlio Gaúcho in the 18th minute of play forced santos's goalkeeper Durvalino Fonseca to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When santos's Paulo Renato Varela in the 21st minute got a chance for a shot 21st didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. After some fancy dribbling in the 25th minute, Roberto Azevedo managed to get in a good position for a shot. Taquarinha SC's supporters rose to their feet, but Roberto Azevedo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Durvalino Fonseca breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. If Roberto Azevedo had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 28th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. 35 minutes into the match, Taquarinha SC's goalkeeper Carlos Augusto Lira had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Pedrinho Loyola. Durvalino Fonseca came out of the goal in the 39th minute to try and stop a shot by Taquarinha SC's Roberto Azevedo. But to his dismay, Roberto Azevedo quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Carlos Augusto Lira didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Pedrinho Loyola went, in the 42nd minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. In the 46th minute, Pedrinho Loyola made a precise shot to the right of Carlos Augusto Lira. Taquarinha SC's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 2-1. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-1 at half-time.

Taquarinha SC's Carlos Augusto Lira played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Pedrinho Loyola in the 54th minute of play. santos were awarded a corner in the 56th minute after Taquarinha SC's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Vito Porto took the corner. In the 57th minute of the match santos got a corner. Taquarinha SC's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Vito Porto ran over to the corner to take the kick. A well-hit corner resulted in Evandro Ribeiro heading the ball towards the goal, but to his dismay he misdirected it and missed the goal completely. If Paulo Renato Varela had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 60th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 64th minute Paulo Renato Varela shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Carlos Augusto Lira saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After having played for 67 minutes, Roberto Azevedo managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Taquarinha SC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Roberto Azevedo was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 70 minutes into the game, santos's Percy Silva nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Carlos Augusto Lira made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 3-1. The audience was convinced that Paulo Renato Varela's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Carlos Augusto Lira was relentless in the 73rd minute of the game. 79 minutes into the match, santos's goal looked a bit too open when Júlio Gaúcho came free, but Durvalino Fonseca reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.
