The ball went over the crossbar instead. 15 minutes into the match, Grêmio FBPA's goal looked a bit too open when Belmiro Paes came free, but William Velasco reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Belmiro Paes received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 17th minute. William Velasco tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. A collision led to Grêmio FBPA getting a freekick after 19 minutes play. Gernando Amaral hit a great ball. Nico de Lara struck a weak shot in the 21st minute. William Velasco didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Tumiritinga AD. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Tião Travassos during the 22nd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 23 played minutes Grêmio FBPA got a freekick which was hit by Tião Travassos. With a little luck, Tumiritinga AD's Romeu Cavalcante got control of the ball when Gernando Amaral tried to sneak it across the goal line. Gernando Amaral might have been able to make a better finish in the 25th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Romeu Cavalcante. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Gernando Amaral ran back to his position shaking his head. If Belmiro Paes had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 29th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The supporters of Grêmio FBPA booed when Tumiritinga AD was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 46 match minutes in a wonderful position. Belmiro Paes didn't get a good kick on the ball. After the first half Tumiritinga AD were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Bernardinho Dracena fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 54th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without William Velasco having to interfere. After some fancy dribbling in the 59th minute, Isaltino Mesquita managed to get in a good position for a shot. Tumiritinga AD's supporters rose to their feet, but Isaltino Mesquita was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. William Velasco breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Tumiritinga AD's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Grêmio FBPA the free kick. Nico de Lara hit a great freekick 65 minutes into the match.
