The supporters of Botucatu SC booed when River Plate - RN was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 11 match minutes in a wonderful position. Alberigo De Cesaris didn't get a good kick on the ball. Wilton Tande didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Joélson Fonseca went, in the 12th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. After having played for 16 minutes, Joélson Fonseca managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Botucatu SC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Joélson Fonseca was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 19th minute, River Plate - RN's Edelmiro Fortun dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 2-1. 25 minutes into the match, Edelmiro Fortun had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Nando Simões. Botucatu SC's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Edelmiro Fortun was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 3-1. Marcelinho da Silveira's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Nando Simões read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 28th minute of play. Botucatu SC's Nando Simões proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 32nd minute of the match, managed to save Botucatu SC from getting a goal against them. Carlos Augusto Pontes recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 33rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After some fancy dribbling in the 34th minute, Di Di Yong managed to get in a good position for a shot. River Plate - RN's supporters rose to their feet, but Di Di Yong was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Nando Simões breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. When Arlindo Loureiro fell near the penalty area in the 35th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Botucatu SC's protests and gave Arlindo Loureiro a yellow card for diving instead. In the 35th match minute, Botucatu SC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Arlindo Loureiro to maneuver through the defense. If Edelmiro Fortun had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 37th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Nando Simões made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Edelmiro Fortun in the 39th minute of play. River Plate - RN were awarded a corner in the 40th minute after Botucatu SC's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Di Di Yong took the corner. But to his dismay, Edelmiro Fortun quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 4-1. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 4-1 at half-time.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Alexandre da Silveira stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Alexandre da Silveira sent away a hard shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. If Gildo Vides had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 57th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Nando Simões didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for River Plate - RN. Marcelinho da Silveira fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 62nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Nando Simões having to interfere. Botucatu SC's Nando Simões played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Marcelinho da Silveira in the 77th minute of play. River Plate - RN's Christian Gaspar was substituted for Ronaldinho Favoretto.
