An unexpectedly hard shot by Bebeto Siqueira in the 4th minute of play forced Cruzeiro's goalkeeper Tristram Lister to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 7th match minute, Cruzeiro was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Marcos de Sena to maneuver through the defense. A collision led to corinthians getting a freekick after 12 minutes play. José Maria Dante hit a great ball. Dida Lopes fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 14th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tristram Lister having to interfere. Tristram Lister showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Bebeto Siqueira, who was totally free with the ball in the 16th minute. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Bebeto Siqueira in the 18th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Tristram Lister prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Tristram Lister took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Dida Lopes, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. A collision led to Cruzeiro getting a freekick after 21 minutes play. Afonso Maia hit a great ball. Dedê da Fonseca received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 24th minute. Tristram Lister tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 25 minutes into the match, Cruzeiro's goal looked a bit too open when Dedê da Fonseca came free, but Tristram Lister reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of Cruzeiro booed when corinthians was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 26 match minutes in a wonderful position. Dino do Vale didn't get a good kick on the ball. Romeo Sévestre struck a weak shot in the 29th minute. Jonas de Andrade didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Cruzeiro. Tristram Lister made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Bebeto Siqueira in the 33rd minute of play. José Maria Dante got his second yellow card in the match during the 34th minute which meant that he had to leave the ground. In the 35th match minute, corinthians was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by José Maria Dante to maneuver through the defense. Tristram Lister made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Dida Lopes in the 41st minute of play. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

If Dida Lopes had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a defensive mix-up in corinthians's zone, Raphael Vianna stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Jonas de Andrade came out of the goal and Raphael Vianna tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Dida Lopes fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 61st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tristram Lister having to interfere. Cruzeiro's Tristram Lister proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 64th minute of the match, managed to save Cruzeiro from getting a goal against them. Benjamin Henrico's late challenge caught a corinthians's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Benjamin Henrico helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Cruzeiro's Benjamin Henrico got a free kick in the 65th minute. In the 68th minute, Bebeto Siqueira hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Dida Lopes in the 70thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Tristram Lister, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. Dida Lopes sent away a hard shot on goal in the 78th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 82nd minute Dida Lopes shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Tristram Lister saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Thanks to some nice moves Dida Lopes could shoot a difficult shot in the 83rd minute, which Tristram Lister however easily saved by the left post. Dida Lopes fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 90th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tristram Lister having to interfere. The teams fought very hard right up to the final whistle. Both sets of players were happy to go away with a draw.
