Gugu Carvalho could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 24th minute of the match, but Sandro Quirino made a huge save. In the 29th match minute, Rio Rubro was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by César Rosa to maneuver through the defense. Patrício Trigo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Luiz Paulo Proença, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 41st minute Délio Mesquita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Patrício Trigo saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Af the end of the first half the score was 1-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

After recieving a nice pass, Rio Rubro's César Rosa tried to score from far away in the 54th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. In the 57th minute, Délio Mesquita left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Rio Rubro fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-1. A collision led to Rio Rubro getting a freekick after 68 minutes play. Elias Mattos hit a great ball. After some careless play in the Rio Rubro defense, Rubinho Motta kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Sandro Quirino. The Rio Rubro fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Sandro Quirino should have stopped the shot. An unexpectedly hard shot by Antônio Carlos Dantas in the 75th minute of play forced Rio Rubro's goalkeeper Sandro Quirino to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball.
