Renatinho Madureira kicked well hit freekick during the 14th minute of the match. In the 17th minute, Giovanni Sarmento left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Sporting Club fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. When Celso Breckenfeld fell near the penalty area in the 20th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Icem's protests and gave Celso Breckenfeld a yellow card for diving instead. The supporters of Sporting Club booed when Icem was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 20 match minutes in a wonderful position. Celso Breckenfeld didn't get a good kick on the ball. After taking down the ball on Icem's corner Décio Pereira fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Ronaldão Lopes quite easily take care of the ball. Edu Fonseca made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Giovanni Sarmento in the 34th minute of play. In the 35th minute Mazinho Paiva shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ronaldão Lopes saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Mazinho Paiva fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 39th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ronaldão Lopes having to interfere. Ronaldão Lopes took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Nestor Domingues, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Thanks to some nice moves Nestor Domingues could shoot a difficult shot in the 42nd minute, which Ronaldão Lopes however easily saved by the left post. 44 minutes into the match, Nestor Domingues had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Ronaldão Lopes. Sporting Club's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Nestor Domingues was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-1. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

After some fancy dribbling in the 53rd minute, Giovanni Sarmento managed to get in a good position for a shot. Sporting Club's supporters rose to their feet, but Giovanni Sarmento was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post.
