The audience was convinced that Ademar de Carvalho's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Nilson Melo was relentless in the 44th minute of the game. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Ademar de Carvalho was the one to do the kick off.
