A long shot from Allan Freire in the 6th minute of play was well struck, but Fernandão Leme made a really good save at the right post. José Augusto Vargas struck a weak shot in the 15th minute. Fernandão Leme didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Rezende. Fernandão Leme made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from José Augusto Vargas in the 17th minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 20th minute, Ramón Martins managed to get in a good position for a shot. Rezende's supporters rose to their feet, but Ramón Martins was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Fernandão Leme breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The audience thought a goal was coming when Adhemar de Mendonça got free with Fernandão Leme in the 22nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After a defensive mix-up in Atlético Nonato's zone, Adhemar de Mendonça stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Fernandão Leme came out of the goal and Adhemar de Mendonça tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. José Augusto Vargas received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 30th minute. Fernandão Leme tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. An unexpectedly hard shot by Vítor Jacinto in the 35th minute of play forced Rezende's goalkeeper Jarbas Arantes to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a defensive mix-up in Rezende's zone, Vítor Jacinto stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Jarbas Arantes came out of the goal and Vítor Jacinto tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Adhemar de Mendonça's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 39thth minute, Fernandão Leme skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. The audience was convinced that Sidnei Paulista's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Jarbas Arantes was relentless in the 43rd minute of the game. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

In the 52nd minute Vítor Jacinto shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jarbas Arantes saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Sidnei Paulista sent away a hard shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 55th match minute, Rezende was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ramón Martins to maneuver through the defense. Jeers came from both ends of the stadium when the final whistle went. Neither team had looked impressive and the draw seeemd a fair result.
