In the 27th minute Evaristo Moreira shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jarbas Arantes saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 30 minutes into the match, SuperCampeõesRJ's goal looked a bit too open when José Augusto Vargas came free, but Germano Sarmento reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Evaristo Moreira was extremely unlucky when he, in the 34th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. Jarbas Arantes made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Evaristo Moreira in the 39th minute of play. If Manuel Miranda had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 41st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Haroldo Lara hit a great freekick 42 minutes into the match. After some fancy dribbling in the 43rd minute, Norberto Tróia managed to get in a good position for a shot. SuperCampeõesRJ's supporters rose to their feet, but Norberto Tróia was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jarbas Arantes breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Norberto Tróia received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 49th minute. Jarbas Arantes tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The wind increased when Evaristo Moreira made the kick off in the second half. After having played for 61 minutes, José Augusto Vargas managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Rezende's supporters crossed their fingers, but José Augusto Vargas was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. With a couple of smart ball manuevers José Augusto Vargas in the 66th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Germano Sarmento saved SuperCampeõesRJ from getting behind. After some careless play in the Rezende defense, Evaristo Moreira kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Jarbas Arantes. The Rezende fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Jarbas Arantes should have stopped the shot. Germano Sarmento came out of the goal and Adhemar de Mendonça tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. José Augusto Vargas fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 95th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Germano Sarmento having to interfere. The Rezende supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Rezende would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
