After 17 minutes, Alessandro da Fonseca mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Piazada and the Atlético RS players grew even worse after the yellow card. The supporters of Atlético RS booed when Piazada was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 17 match minutes in a wonderful position. Alessandro da Fonseca didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 22nd match minute, Piazada was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by César Antunes to maneuver through the defense. Célio Félix received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 25th minute. Alfredão de Medeiros tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 28th minute Célio Félix shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Alfredão de Medeiros saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Atlético RS were awarded a corner in the 30th minute after Piazada's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Marcel Vale took the corner. After taking down the ball on Atlético RS's corner Marcel Vale fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Alfredão de Medeiros quite easily take care of the ball. After a defensive mix-up in Piazada's zone, Célio Félix stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Alfredão de Medeiros came out of the goal and Célio Félix tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Alfredão de Medeiros made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Abelardo Neiva in the 36th minute of play. When Luisinho Barral came up free with the goalie in the 39th minute, the Piazada fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Luisinho Barral couldn't finish the play. César Antunes received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 41st minute. Manoel Félix tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 46 played minutes Piazada got a freekick which was hit by César Antunes. Disappointed in the 0-2 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Célio Félix was the one to do the kick off. Luisinho Barral struck a weak shot in the 54th minute. Manoel Félix didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Piazada. An unexpectedly hard shot by Célio Félix in the 58th minute of play forced Piazada's goalkeeper Alfredão de Medeiros to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 60 minutes into the match, Piazada's goal looked a bit too open when Célio Félix came free, but Alfredão de Medeiros reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Piazada's Alfredão de Medeiros proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 62nd minute of the match, managed to save Piazada from getting a goal against them. After having played for 91 minutes, Kléberson Hermes managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Piazada's supporters crossed their fingers, but Kléberson Hermes was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. If Célio Félix had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 98th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. The Piazada manager could be seen shouting at his players as they walked down the tunnel after the match. He was clearly angry that they had squandered their superior possession, allowing Atlético RS to win.
