Francisco de Queiroz blasted a shot towards the goal in the 22nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Raimundo Ortiz having to make a save. When Diego Travassos fell near the penalty area in the 30th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Grêmio Atlético Paulista's protests and gave Diego Travassos a yellow card for diving instead. After 31 played minutes Grêmio Atlético Paulista got a freekick which was hit by Diego Travassos. André Vergílio blasted a shot towards the goal in the 33rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Raimundo Ortiz having to make a save. Dudu Barral got his second yellow card in the match during the 37th minute which meant that he had to leave the ground. Dudu Barral hit a great freekick 38 minutes into the match. If André Vergílio had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 42nd minute. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Walmyr Guimarães couldn't finish the play. The audience thought a goal was coming when André Vergílio got free with Raimundo Ortiz in the 70th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 72nd minute, Walmyr Guimarães got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 73rd minute, Cícero Dracena hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. An unexpectedly hard shot by Francisco de Queiroz in the 77th minute of play forced Grêmio Atlético Paulista's goalkeeper Raimundo Ortiz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. André Vergílio could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 79th minute of the match, but Raimundo Ortiz made a huge save. 81 minutes into the match, Francisco de Queiroz dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Raimundo Ortiz, 0-1.
