In the 30thth minute of the game Aílton Pitta who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but S.C Internacional's Frederico da Fonseca was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Frederico da Fonseca made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Wellington Aguiar in the 31st minute of play. Frederico da Fonseca didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Aílton Pitta went, in the 36th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-2 was the resulting score. If Wellington Aguiar had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 40th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 42 played minutes S.C Internacional got a freekick which was hit by Jailson Perez. Wellington Aguiar struck a weak shot in the 45th minute. Frederico da Fonseca didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Grêmio. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 1-2.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Iuri Fantini was the one to do the kick off. Aílton Pitta sent away a hard shot on goal in the 57th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. With a little luck, S.C Internacional's Frederico da Fonseca got control of the ball when Wellington Aguiar tried to sneak it across the goal line. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Sílvio Luís Quadros prevented the ball from getting in the gole. If Wellington Aguiar had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 64th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. 68 minutes into the game, Iuri Fantini was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. S.C Internacional's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Grêmio the free kick. Iuri Fantini recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 72nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 74th minute, Aílton Pitta reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Frederico da Fonseca. The goal made the score 1-4. In the 78th minute, Dário Mendonça hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 86thth minute of the game Hudson Coelho who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Grêmio's Sílvio Luís Quadros was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 89th minute, Wellington Aguiar managed to get in a good position for a shot. Grêmio's supporters rose to their feet, but Wellington Aguiar was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Frederico da Fonseca breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 91st minute, Wellington Aguiar reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Frederico da Fonseca. The goal made the score 1-5. The Grêmio supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Grêmio would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
