The referee ignored Palmeiras's protests and gave Arnaldo Messias a yellow card for diving instead. Arnaldo Messias hit a great freekick 12 minutes into the match. Guga Paranaense blasted a shot towards the goal in the 15th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Maurício Marquez having to make a save. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Guga Paranaense was the one to do the kick off. Palmeiras's supporters rose to their feet, but Isaltino Neves was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Palmeiras's Maurício Marquez played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Guga Paranaense in the 98th minute of play. Palmeiras's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
