Lúcio Fontes could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 17th minute of the match, but Júlio Sampaio made a huge save. Lúcio Fontes fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 24th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Júlio Sampaio having to interfere. After 27 played minutes Port Vale got a freekick which was hit by Abel Marinho. Tadeu de Mendonça sent away a hard shot on goal in the 28th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. An unexpected shot in the 42nd minute by Tadeu de Mendonça got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Tadeu de Mendonça stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Róbson Pimenta was shown his second yellow card after 51 minutes, following a rather ugly tackle on opponent. That was the end of his participation in the match. Ramiro Leão took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 96th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Júlio Sampaio. Port Vale's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Port Vale's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
