In the 17th minute the ball was on its way in behind C a r t o l i n h a - SP's goalkeeper Delfim Lima, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Kaká Pombal hit a great freekick 27 minutes into the match. 28 minutes into the game, Richard Melo was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Manchester United's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave C a r t o l i n h a - SP the free kick. The supporters of C a r t o l i n h a - SP booed when Manchester United was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 28 match minutes in a wonderful position. Richard Melo didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 29 minutes, Gilvan Sabóia managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. C a r t o l i n h a - SP's supporters crossed their fingers, but Gilvan Sabóia was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. If Richard Melo had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 33rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Jacinto Carvalho showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Telmo Coelho, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. 41 minutes into the match, Duarte de Alcântara notched a goal, 0-2, to the right of C a r t o l i n h a - SP's Delfim Lima. Delfim Lima was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Duarte de Alcântara fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 44th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Delfim Lima having to interfere. Dudu Amaral received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 48th minute. Delfim Lima tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Disappointed in the 0-2 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Telmo Coelho stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. 52 minutes into the match, C a r t o l i n h a - SP's goalkeeper Delfim Lima had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Geovanni Esteves. Enéas Souto's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Delfim Lima read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 58th minute of play. When Duarte de Alcântara came up free with the goalie in the 61st minute, the Manchester United fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Duarte de Alcântara couldn't finish the play. The crowd rose to their feet as Duarte de Alcântara kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Delfim Lima. That made the score 0-3 in the 64 minute of play. Duarte de Alcântara's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 69thth minute, Delfim Lima skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. 72 minutes into the match, Manchester United's goal looked a bit too open when Telmo Coelho came free, but Jacinto Carvalho reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Jacinto Carvalho made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Júlio Mangueira in the 73rd minute of play. If Kaká Pombal had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 75th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Frederico Jacinto might have been able to make a better finish in the 76th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Delfim Lima. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Frederico Jacinto ran back to his position shaking his head. The supporters of Manchester United booed when C a r t o l i n h a - SP was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 78 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fausto Albuquerque didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 80th minute, Duarte de Alcântara ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Delfim Lima was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-4. Delfim Lima showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Duarte de Alcântara, who was totally free with the ball in the 84th minute. After a defensive mix-up in C a r t o l i n h a - SP's zone, Frederico Jacinto stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Delfim Lima came out of the goal and Frederico Jacinto tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 91st minute, Duarte de Alcântara got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Manchester United played a much better game than C a r t o l i n h a - SP and deserved their victory. The C a r t o l i n h a - SP players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
