Jorginho Eger showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Raí de Brito, who was totally free with the ball in the 6th minute. Sport Recife's Jorginho Eger played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Raí de Brito in the 17th minute of play. After a rather tough play, Cruzeiro EC's Nilmar Leite got a free kick in the 19th minute. When the match clock showed 23 minutes, the score became 0-1 when Fiori Cardozo sped through Sport Recife's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Jorginho Eger. Raí de Brito sent away a hard shot on goal in the 27th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After some careless play in the Sport Recife defense, Raí de Brito kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Jorginho Eger. The Sport Recife fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Jorginho Eger should have stopped the shot. When Raí de Brito came up free with the goalie in the 39th minute, the Cruzeiro EC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Raí de Brito couldn't finish the play. After 40 played minutes Sport Recife got a freekick which was hit by André Luiz Trancoso. Fiori Cardozo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 42nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jorginho Eger having to interfere. In the 44th minute Fiori Cardozo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jorginho Eger saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 45 minutes into the game, Sport Recife's Antônio Tasso nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Juvenal de Godoi made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-2. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 1-2 lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Raí de Brito to make the kick off. Juvenal de Godoi was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Juvenal de Godoi came out of the goal in the 65th minute to try and stop a shot by Sport Recife's Edu Arruda. But to his dismay, Edu Arruda quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 3-2. Fiori Cardozo received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 71st minute. Jorginho Eger tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 73 minutes into the match, Sport Recife's goalkeeper Jorginho Eger had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Fiori Cardozo. Sport Recife's Jorginho Eger proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 77th minute of the match, managed to save Sport Recife from getting a goal against them. In the 80th match minute, Cruzeiro EC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Silvério Tande to maneuver through the defense. After recieving a nice pass, Sport Recife's Dino Vasconcelos tried to score from far away in the 81st minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. Juvenal de Godoi made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Antônio Tasso in the 85th minute of play. The crowd rose to their feet as Cruzeiro EC's Raí de Brito slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Jorginho Eger. That made the score 3-3 after 89 minutes of play.
